Contained in LAFERT vitamins: B6, B12, D, selenium, zinc and folate contribute to the normal function of the immune system. Vitamins B6 and B12 contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism, to normal functioning of the nervous system and to normal red blood cell formation. What is more, vitamin B6, B12 and folate contribute to normal homocysteine metabolism, to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal psychological function. Selenium and zinc contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress, while vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity and vitamin B12 has a role in the process of cell division. Vitamin D contributes to normal absorption/utilization of calcium and phosphorus, to normal blood calcium levels, to the maintenance of normal bones, normal muscle function, to the maintenance of normal teeth and also has a role in the process of cell division. Moreover, selenium contributes to the normal thyroid function, zinc contributes to normal DNA synthesis, to normal fertility and reproduction, to normal cognitive function, to normal carbohydrate metabolism and to normal acid-base metabolism. What is more, zinc contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism, to normal metabolism of fatty acids, to normal metabolism of vitamin A, to normal protein synthesis, to the maintenance of normal bones and to the maintenance of normal vision. Both – selenium and zinc contribute to the maintenance of normal hair and nails. Folate contained in LAFERT contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy, contributes to normal amino acid synthesis, to normal blood formation and has a role in the process of cell division. Supplemental folic acid intake increases maternal folate status. Low maternal folate status is a risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the developing foetus.

The target population is women of child-bearing age and the beneficial effect is obtained with a supplemental folic acid daily intake of 400 μg for at least one month before and up to three months after conception.
